Insurance coverage

It’s always best to contact your insurance provider directly to ask whether supplements or lab tests are covered, as coverage varies by plan. For supplements, you can retrieve the cost from your account if you’d like to request pre-approval, or you can submit an invoice after placing your order. Fullscript doesn’t work directly with insurance providers and can’t verify whether a purchase will qualify for coverage.

HSA/FSA cards

Some insurance companies issue cards that can be used for online purchases and carry a balance for eligible expenses, or that allow charges to be reimbursed later. While Fullscript can’t verify whether a specific purchase is eligible, you can contact the issuer of your HSA or FSA card for more information and to ask about pre-approval.

DINs & NDCs

DIN stands for Drug Identification Number, which is assigned to products recognized as drugs under the Canadian Food and Drugs Act. NDC refers to a National Drug Code, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses to identify drugs.

DINs and NDCs are used by insurance providers to identify prescription drugs for coverage purposes. These numbers are only available for pharmaceuticals and aren’t issued for supplements (also known as nutraceuticals).

CPT codes

CPT stands for Current Procedural Terminology. In some cases, a practitioner may issue a CPT code for certain medical services or treatments. You can then provide this code to your insurance provider to see whether they’re eligible for coverage.

For herbal supplements specifically, there aren’t any unique CPT codes beyond the general code used for non-prescription items: A9150. Some insurance companies may reimburse claims submitted with this code, while others won’t. One possible exception may be health savings accounts (HSAs), some of which do allow reimbursement for herbal supplements. If you have questions about whether this code applies to your situation, it’s best to check with your practitioner.

Tax ID requests

In some cases, you or your insurance provider may request a Tax ID to process an insurance claim.

The Tax ID that applies to your order depends on how your practitioner’s dispensary is set up. Some dispensaries are structured so that Fullscript is the seller of record, while others are structured so that the practitioner is the seller of record.

If a Tax ID is required for an insurance claim, it’s best to contact your practitioner directly to confirm which Tax ID applies to your order.

Labs and insurance coverage

Lab tests ordered through Fullscript are offered as cash-pay only and aren’t eligible for insurance reimbursement. Fullscript doesn’t work directly with insurance providers, so lab orders can’t be billed to insurance, submitted retroactively, or reimbursed through superbills.

Fullscript doesn’t determine HSA or FSA eligibility. For questions about coverage, it’s best to check with your plan administrator.
